Follow these simple steps to get accurate pleat width, count, underlap, and total material.

Measure the desired waist circumference of the garment.

Decide what you want to set first.

  • Pleat Count: how many pleats.
  • Pleat Width: how wide each pleat.

Enter the usable width of the fabric before pleating. Do not include the seam allowances in this measurement.

The calculator automatically updates the remaining values.

  • Pleat Width
  • Pleat Count
  • Pleat Underlap

Fine tune any value to get the pleat look and fabric usage you want.

How the calculations work
Value Formula
Pleat Width Pleat Width = Waist ÷ Pleat Count
Pleat Count Pleat Count = Waist ÷ Pleat Width
Pleat Underlap Pleat Underlap = (Total Material - Waist) ÷ Pleat Count
Total Material Total Material = Pleat Count × (Pleat Width + Pleat Underlap)
What is underlap?

Underlap is the extra fabric hidden behind each pleat. It allows the pleats to overlap properly and gives the garment its fullness.
